What types of accidents can cause rib injuries?

We've heard of a range of different scenarios that have led to our clients sustaining broken, cracked, or bruised ribs. Examples include:

  • On the road: many of the people we hear from are seeking compensation for ribs that have been broken in a car accident. You may have been a fellow driver, a cyclist, motorcyclist, or a pedestrian and a vehicle may have done something it shouldn't, causing you to get hit.
  • In another public place: sometimes slips, trips and falls occur in public places such as in a park, a shop, or when walking along a pavement. If somebody misplaced something or built one of the surfaces in a way that's not safe and it led you to you injuringe your ribs, you may be able to claim.
  • At work: we sometimes talk to people who've had an injury while at work. This may happen while dealing with faulty machinery, working on a farm, or encountering health and safety hazards on a building site, to name a few examples. Your employer has a duty of care to keep you safe, and if they've not upheld it, it may be worth contacting us.

Claiming compensation for rib injuries FAQs

There are certain questions we often get asked about rib injury compensation claims. We've compiled these and answered them below for you to refer to.

How is the value of a claim for broken ribs determined?

Various considerations go into the final amount you could get as compensation, such as the severity of the injury and how much of a financial burden it has imposed on your life (and could in the future).

To get a ballpark estimate of how much you could be entitled to, use our accident & personal injury compensation calculator

Compensation is broken down into two components:

  1. General damages: this refers to your suffering and how your way of life has been changed (for example: having to give up a hobby).
  2. Special damages: This refers to the expenses relating to your injuries, like medical bills, travel costs and loss of income.

You can strengthen your case by gathering as much evidence as you can. Any photos taken at the time of the accident, an accident report form from your employer, details of any witnesses, medical notes, and CCTV footage from the incident are all helpful for us.

How do I start my claim?

  2. Fill in our quick call back form so that one of us can get in touch within a time  frame of your choosing.

What happens if my claim is unsuccessful?

We'll only take on your case if we're confident that it has a reasonable chance of winning. Our lawyers listen carefully to everything you tell them and assess whether to proceed or not.

However, if your claim isn't successful for any reason, we won't charge you a penny. This is because we work on a no win no fee basis. This also means there won't be any upfront charge to you. If you win, you'll only need to pay your lawyer an agreed amount from your compensation costs, meaning the case won't leave you with less money than before you started.

Is there a time limit for making my claim?

The general rule is that you'll have three years to start your claim. If your injury doesn't become apparent until after the accident, your three years will likely start from the date of your medical diagnosis.

There are exceptions. For example, if you were a child when the injury occurred, you'll have three years between turning 18 and turning 21 to get the claim underway. And if you are claiming on behalf of someone who has been mentally incapacitated by the accident, then no time limit applies.

If your ribs were broken or bruised due to a criminal offence, you are likely to have a two-year period within which to start your claim. You would also need to claim via the CICA scheme.
